ERBIL – Kurdish Member of Iraqi Parliament Arafat Karam Stuni has said that the Iraqi Federal government has no weapons for Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), but free for the out-lawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters. He believes it is a big risk for the Kurdish peace process in Turkey.

On Wednesday, Stuni told BasNews that KRG officials have often asked Baghdad government for the military rights and share of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, but Baghdad says that they do not have weapons for Peshmerga.

He continued, “But for PKK fighters, Baghdad has free weapons. This will leave negative impacts on the peace process in North Kurdistan [Turkey Kurdistan].”

“Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is the owner of the peace process in North Kurdistan. Here we ask, if Baghdad aims to support PKK as a Kurdish force, why it doesn’t support Kurdistan Democratic Party – Iran (KDPI) Peshmerga?” Stuni said.

He stated that what Baghdad is doing is an answer to the Turkish troops deployed in northern Iraq.

“We hope that PKK won’t make such mistake by getting weapons from Baghdad because it will have a negative consequence on the Kurdish peace process in Turkey. Turkey is an important country, our neighbor and member of NATO,” Stuni added.

He concluded, “Baghdad wants to destroy its relations with Turkey which is not in the interest of Iraq because Abadi’s government [Iraqi federal government] is weak now.”
