HALABJA — Head of the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Committee for Interior Affairs has reiterated that no military force outside the control of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) legitimate forces can operate in the region.

Dana Shahid Jaza told BasNews that any such force is illegal.

Over the last two weeks the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has stationed guerrillas in mountainous areas of Halabja province, in the south east of the Kurdistan Region.

Jaza said that they are investigating the PKK’s presence, and won’t permit them to operate in the Kurdistan Region. BasNews previously reported that PKK guerrillas have set up checkpoints around Halabja, and organise daily activities in the city.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is accused of assisting the PKK expansion in Halabja. In recent months, the PKK has attempted to expand its influence in the Kurdistan Region, with a focus on Sinjar and surrounding areas before the move south east to Halabja.
