HALABJA — The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is accused of trying to take control of border areas between Iran and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and prevent any activity by Iranian Kurdish opposition parties.

The PKK recently stationed guerrillas across Halabja Province in the south of the Kurdistan Region, and Iranian Kurdish opposition parties claim the plan is masterminded by the Iranian government.

Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) politburo member Mohammed Nazif Qadri told BasNews that the PKK’s operations inside the Kurdistan Region will inflame tensions and serve the interests of opponents.

Qadri believes that the party must focus on Turkish Kurdistan alone and avoid intervening in other parts of Kurdistan.

In May skirmishes between the PKK and KDPI occurred when PKK guerrillas prevented an Iranian Kurdish Peshmerga convoy from conducting an operation on Iran’s border strip.

BasNews previously quoted Head of the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Committee for Interior Affairs on the issue, who said that no military force outside the control of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) legitimate forces can operate in the region.

Siyawash Mohammadi, a journalist close to Iranian Kurdish leaders, revealed that Iranian Kurdish opposition parties are planning to start a new political and military phase in the fight for their rights in Iran.

He believes that the PKK is being instructed by the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt any operation against Iran in the area. “They are simply cooperating against the influence of Kurdish parties inside Iranian Kurdistan.”
