ERBIL – Sinjar Mayor Mahma Khalil claims that Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters have settled in government buildings in the Yazidi town of Sinjar in northern Iraq, and have ignored requests to leave.

On Monday, Khalil said, "The PKK has not left government buildings in Sinjar. We have asked them to leave the buildings as soon as possible. We will take legal action against fighters and forces that deployed to Sinjar after the liberation of the town."

Yazidi Peshmerga Commander in Sinjar Qassim Shasho told the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official website that the PKK remains in buildings that it took over some days ago. “We have asked their commanders to leave the area and they agreed, but they remain there and ignore us whenever we remind them,” said Shasho.

He continued, "Governmental buildings do not belong to any political parties or any political forces. The PKK has no choice but to leave the buildings. Government employees can't return to work and serve people unless the PKK leave the buildings."

PKK militants have been on Mount Sinjar for more than a year, and had been fighting on the frontline in the town alongside the Peshmerga.

Sinjar was overrun by Islamic State (IS) militants in August 2014. In a successful military operation on November 13th, the Peshmerga, in coordination with US-led coalition airstrikes, liberated the town.
