Saleh Muslim: Syrian Kurds Must Be At Saudi Meeting

Some opposition groups accuse PYD of links to Assad regime

KOBANI – Syrian Kurds must be represented at next month's Syrian opposition conference in Saudi Arabia, says Democratic Union Party (PYD) co-chair Saleh Muslim.

Muslim told Reuters that he would be happy to be represented at the as yet undated conference by the US-backed coalition of Arabs and Kurds, the Democratic Forces of Syria.

The PYD vehemently denies any connection to the Assad regime in Damascus, a charge often levelled at the party by other opposition groups. Muslim insists that the PYD's armed wing People's Protection Units (YPG) are leading the fight against Islamic State (IS), and have an important stake in Syria's future.

“They are the main partner against Da'esh [IS]. Those forces are taking areas liberated from the regime and from Da'esh, so this group should be a part of it.

“If there is Free Syrian Army, this group should also be represented. The representation of the autonomous [Kurdish] area also should be there because they are a main factor in this conflict.”

Switching to focus on Syria's northern neighbour, Muslim was in no mood for conciliatory nods towards Ankara, accusing the Turkish government of arming several jihadist groups in Syria.

“There is Da'esh, there is an Al-Qaeda-related organisation, Nusra Front, which works with groups like Ahrar al-Sham and the others. Many of those are supported by Turkey – this is the problem. Everything has been made very clear in front of our eyes,” he said, adding that he believes the shooting down of a Russian jet by Turkey was an attempt to scupper a political solution to the four and a half year civil war.

“Turkey wanted to turn the tables because they don’t want the Syrian conflict to go toward a peace process and a political solution. I think there was planning for such a thing.” Asked if the PYD had strengthened its relationship with Moscow, Muslim said, “It is just ordinary contact ... we have a representative in Moscow who relays information from them. But there is nothing new.”
