SINJAR – Kurdish Peshmerga forces have once again delayed the operation to liberate Sinjar due to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) movements in the area.

Peshmerga Commander on the Sinjar frontline Sme Bosali told BasNews that they had planned a major offensive on Islamic State (IS) militants in the Yazidi town in northern Iraq, but the operation has had to be delayed.

Bosali explained that the PKK, the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) started moving forces into the area, contrary to Peshmerga plans.

Once IS noticed the movements by the PKK and other parties, he continued, they retreated, and planting mines and IEDs throughout the outskirts of Sinjar, a move which scuppered Peshmerga plans.

Yazidi Peshmerga Commander Qassim Shasho blamed the PKK and its allies for frequently disrupting Peshmerga plans.

He urged the PKK and YPG fighters to leave the area soon “because their assistance has never been required by the Yazidis.”

Mayor of Sinjar Mahma Khalil told BasNews that the case of Sinjar is a humanitarian issue which the PKK is attempting to turn it to a political matter.

Mahma urged the PKK and YPG to leave the area and let the Peshmerga liberate the city. “They can offer no help as they are operating out of the control of Peshmerga forces with no cooperation with the international coalition.”

ERBIL – The Peshmerga Ministry of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that no forces other than the Peshmerga will take part in the operation to liberate Sinjar in northern Iraq.

Peshmerga Forces’ Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Jamal Mohammed told BasNews that the Peshmerga alone will move on Sinjar, and other forces are not welcome in the imminent operation.

Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani leads every advance made by the Peshmerga, and he will command the Sinjar operation as well, Mohammed said.

He revealed that they have already ordered the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Syrian Kurdish fighters not to intervene into the operation.

The predominantly Yazidi town of Sinjar has been under the control of Islamic State since early august 2014. The entire population have left their homes for refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region and abroad.
