KHURMATU - Jabar Yawar, secretary general of the Ministry of Peshmerga, says Kurds will do whatever possible to calm the situation in the mixed town of Tuz Khurmatu in southern Kirkuk Province. Tensions have been rising between Kurdish forces and the Shi'ite militia Hashd al-Shaabi in recent days.

On Saturday, Yawar told BasNews that the Peshmerga are concerned about recent clashes between Kurdish security forces and the Shi'ite group.

“We will do anything to calm the situation and make people feel safe in Tuz Khurmatu,” said Yawar.

In the last two days, the Shi'ite have attacked Kurdish party offices and Kurdish people in the town, resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides.

Yawar said the Kurds are committed to a Friday agreement signed by both sides, to restore order in the town.

However, the Hashd al-Shaabi militia continue to attack Kurdish houses and party offices in Tuz Khurmatu and a senior Peshmerga commander has warned the group that they will respond fiercely.

“We will not accept any attacks on Kurds or Kurdish forces in Khurmatu,” warned Commander Sheikh Jaffar Sheikh Mustafa.

Since the fall of Mosul in June 2014 to Islamic State, Shi'ite militia groups have been deployed to the provinces of Kirkuk and Salahaddin in northern Iraq.

On Friday, former Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki and deputy commander of Shi'ite militia group warned the Peshmerga in the area and said any advance by the Kurdish forces won’t be accepted.

BasNews has learned that Friday's agreement was made under the supervision of Iran.

After Thursday and Friday's clashes, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi called for restrain and told local security forces to restore calm to the town and prevent further attacks on people’s properties.
