Political Fight for Sinjar Begins

Baghdad – Following reports that Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani said that no flag other than that of the Kurdistan Region should be flown above newly liberated Sinjar, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has told activists that it is the Iraqi flag which should be raised across the town.
Abadi was meeting activists from Babylon, when he made the comment. He said that as a federal territory, Baghdad has jurisdiction over Sinjar, and therefore the only flag that should be flown is the Iraqi one.Source : http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/243632
Barzani on Friday told the press that the only flag to be raised in the town would be that of the Kurdistan Region, although officials close to the President have insisted that Abadi has misunderstood his comments.
Barzani was, they say, referring to the flying of flags belonging to political parties. The Iraqi flag is flown at all official buildings in the Kurdistan Region.
Sinjar lies in territory disputed by the KRG and federal government, and the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) has called for the establishment of an independent canton in the area.
