Authorities perplexed by teenager's motives

SYDENY – The fatal shooting of a New South Wales resident has left the police trying to unravel a “mystery”, says NSW police chief Andrew Scipione.
Curtis Cheng, who had worked for the finance department of the NSW police for 17 years, was shot dead by an unnamed 15 year-old boy of Iraqi Kurdish heritage on Friday.
Police returned fire during the incident, killing the teenager.
“We believe that his actions were politically motivated and therefore linked to terrorism,” Scipione told reporters at a press conference held with NSW premier Mike Baird.
““We understand he is of an Iraqi-Kurdish background and he was born in Iran. We’re a long way from establishing a full picture of this man; his exact motivations still remain a mystery to us.
“We are exploring every avenue with regard to why he did what he did.” Scipione said that the gunman was working alone and that his officers will be establishing how he got hold of the weapon as a matter of priority.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the murder as “doubly shocking because it was perpetrated by a 15-year-old boy.”
His opposition counterpart Bill Shorten warned, “At times like this, it’s critical that we guard against dangerous division – we are stronger and safer when we stand together.”
