ERBIL

A Kurdish Yazidi Peshmerga commander has said that the withdrawal of Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) and Democratic Union Party (PYD) fighters from the Kurdistan Region is an important step in preventing a Kurdish civil war.

The PKK and PYD have been present in Sinjar and neighboring areas in Kurdistan since August, when Islamic State militants attacked and captured Sinjar. Now there are calls for PKK and PYD fighters to leave the area.

Yazidi Peshmerga commander on Mount Sinjar Qassim Shashou told BasNews on Tuesday that they would be happy to see the withdrawal of PKK guerrillas.

“PKK and PYD fighters leaving the Sinjar area would be important, as it would prevent a Kurdish civil war,”
said Shashou.

“We thank any PKK leader that can pull these forces out of the area, because their presence will create tension and conflict and we don’t want these forces to be here,” added the Yazidi commander.

He said that they are fighting as part of the Peshmerga and any force other than the Peshmerga causes trouble.

“The PKK withdrawal issues are related to internal conflicts between senior PKK leaders Cemil Bayık and Murat Karayilan,” revealed Shashou.

A few days ago, PKK commander Murat Karayilan said that the PKK leadership group is meeting regarding the possible withdrawal of PKK and PYD fighters from the Kurdistan Region.
