Former PYD Leader: Barzani Rescued Syrian KurdistanSource : http://basnews.com/en/interviews/2014/11/20/former-pyd-leader-barzani-rescued-syrian-kurdistan/
In an exclusive interview with BasNews, one of the former representatives of Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Europe points out that if Kurdistan Region President, Massoud Barzani did not helped Kurdish city of Kobani many other Kurdish areas would have fall under control of Islamic State (IS) militants.
Former PYD Representative, Sheran Ibrahim spoke about the current situation in the Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) and said, “PYD forceful policy to dominate Rojava resulted in IS advance in the Kurdish areas’.
“If there is election now in Syrian Kurdistan, many people won’t be voting for PYD. Creating administration cantons as well as dividing the villages and town on so many administration units has worried United States and western countries. If PYD applied the same or similar strategies of the Kurdistan Region, international countries wouldn’t have turned their back toward Rojava now,’ said Ibrahim.
Commenting on the establishment of the Kurdish administration cantons, Ibrahim noted that PYD established the cantons as a reaction against Kurdistan National Council of Syria (KNCS, after KNCS participated in Syrian Opposition Geneva Conference last year.
Regarding Kurdish Peshmerga forces going to Kobani, Ibrahim says, “all Rojava is under attack and all of Syrian Regime and radical Islamic groups, including IS insurgents attack Syrian Kurdistan. Whenever they are defeated from one place, they start to attacks another Kurdish area”.
Ibrahim said that Kobani was close to fall to IS militants, however the current situation is better due to Peshmerga forces and YPG [Military wing of PYD] fighters with the help of US-led coalition airstrikes protecting the city.
“There is no strategic relationship between PYD and Syrian Regime. When the revolution started in Syria, regime lost control of some part of Rojava. Thus, regime handed those areas to YPG to destroy the revolution in there and then handed it back to regime, but YPG won’t do that. Now, there is problem in some parts of Rojava, therefore, YPG and Syrian regime mutually administrates some towns and areas in Syrian Kurdistan’, said Ibrahim.
“There are different opinions within PYD, but not publicly. There is a different opinion in PYD that wants Rojava to be open to the world and attract western countries toward the area as well as attempting toward independency. PYD’s policies are always threat for causing instability in Rojava. Duhok agreement was not a strategic one; it was an agreement to allow Peshmerga forces to enter Kobani. If Peshmerga forces weren’t sent to Kobani, Kobani will have completely been fallen,” noted Ibrahim.
Ibrahim also said that Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) intervention in administrating Rojava was another reason for Rojava’s conflicts because PKK’s support was politically good, but their intervention was not acceptable neither by Turkey nor by United States.
About the request of Obama’s administration to Rojava, he said, “Washington told us that we as Kurdish parties in Rojava become united and agree among ourselves than they US will support us, but PYD didn’t accept other parties.”
“If PYD doesn’t take a lesson from Kobani and doesn’t change its policies, Efrin canton will fall, if not Efrin then Qamishli will fall. PYD will not be successful if they continue with their current policies,” Ibrahim warned PYD.
Commenting whether PYD asked Turkey for arming Kurdish fighters in Rojava, he said, “through media and direct contacts, PYD asked Turkey to arm Kurdish fighters in Syrian Kurdistan, but Turkey refused because they don’t want to arm Kurdish fighters in Kobani who are close to PKK and Ankara is afraid those weapon might end up being used against its army”.
In addition Ibrahim predicts that PYD is not ready to agree with other Kurdish political parties in Rojava and says “I find it difficult to see any agreement between Kurdish parties in the area. PYD want to control all parties in Syrian Kurdistan and be the leader of Rojava and the other Kurdish parties do not accept this,” added Ibrahim.
