An Iraqi Kurdish youth who left his home to join Islamic State militants has been killed in a town near Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

According to a relative of the youth, his name was Zanyar Hama-khan, he was only 20 years old and was from Khurmal, a town near Halabja on the Iranian border.

BasNews has learned that Zanyar joined IS a few weeks ago and was killed on October 20th, during clashes between Kurdish Peshmerga forces and IS insurgents in Daquq, a town in Kirkuk Province in northern Iraq.

Zanyar’s relative said that he became member of the Jihadi group two months ago, but doesn’t know how or why Zanyar chose this path.

He said that a few days ago members of Islamic State contacted them and informed them of their relative’s death. They told them he was killed during clashes in Daquq.

According to KRG figures, since the start of the Syrian crisis more than three years ago, hundreds of Kurdish youths have gone to Syria and joined Islamic State.

The KRG has banned anyone from organizing funerals for Kurdish youths who have been killed while fighting for Islamic State.
