Father, grandfather get life for burying teenage girl alive

23 March 2012 / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,

A court has sentenced the father and grandfather of a 16-year-old girl who was found dead after having been buried alive in her family's backyard in 2009 to aggravated life imprisonment.

Medine Memi was reported missing by her family in late December of last year. After 40 days had passed with no leads, police receive a tip that led to a search of the girl's family home in Adıyaman's Kahta district. During the search they discovered a hole two meters deep underneath a chicken coop in the backyard. Medine had been buried in the hole in a sitting position with her hands tied.

The results of an autopsy revealed that Medine had a significant amount of dirt in her stomach and lungs, and forensic experts in Malatya, where the autopsy was performed, said this indicated that the girl had been buried alive. Before she was killed, Medine had reportedly sought help from police, going to them several times to report abuse she and her mother suffered from.

The Adıyaman High Criminal Court concluded the two-year-old case on Thursday, convicting her father, Ayhan Memi, and her grandfather, Fethi Memi, of premeditated murder, disregarding the father's request for acquittal based on the defense that Fethi Memi had actually buried the girl. The two were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment.
